Carnegie Medals went to Kevin Barrett and Cameron Whiting for the ocean rescue, and San Diego native Richard Fierro for disarming a Colorado nightclub shooter

Kevin Barrett, 51, of San Diego, and Cameron Whiting, 31, of Encinitas, will receive the Carnegie Medal, which recognizes civilians who perform acts of heroism at great personal risk, for guiding a wounded swimmer to shore after the man was bitten by a juvenile great white shark on June 2.

Caleb Adams, 46, was among more than a dozen people taking part in an open-water swim when he was bitten by the nine-foot shark.

Two San Diego area men, Kevin Barrett and Cameron Whiting, have been awarded North America's highest honor for civilian heroism for saving their teammate from a shark attack while swimming in the Pacific Ocean in Del Mar.
