The automaker’s actions come after it recalled nearly 100,000 of the EVs due to an issue that can cause the doors to open unexpectedly. The impacted vehicles include 2021-2024 models made at VW’s manufacturing facilities in Germany and Tennessee.

The issue culminated this week with VW halting production of the all-electric ID.4 at its factory in Chattanooga, Tennessee, as it scrambles to find a fix for the faulty electronic door mechanism. According to the recall, water was seeping into the door and shorting out the electronics, causing the circuitry to issue a faulty “open command.”

Production of the ID.4 is paused after recalling 98,606 vehicles for door handle faults. About 200 employees will be furloughed, with each receiving 80% of their base pay. VW has not provided a timeline for when a solution to the issues will arrive.
